Window of Tolerance

The window of tolerance (WoT) is our “sweet spot” where we function best in our daily lives. When we are within the boundaries of this window, we often are calm, cool, collected, and connected. Everyday, all of us to move up and down within this window. When we go beyond the boundaries of this window, we may act in our stress behavior. It is normal for periods of stress and/or trauma to shrink our windows of tolerance.

Exploring Grief

MKs and TCKs have unique challenges in dealing with grief because many of their losses are hidden, ambiguous or unnamed. When these losses are not named, they become layers of grief, like stones in a stacked tower. We want to help parents explore and be educated in different aspects of grief and how it impacts their child. Here are some simple ideas and resources to help parents name and process a child's grief in regular healthy ways.

Establishing rhythms

Rhythms are habits of significance or traditions that bond families together and build resilience in MKs. They can be “packed in a suitcase” and taken wherever you go creating continuity in family life. Find some great resources on what rhythms are and how to continue to build them for your family here.

Creating a gap plan

With rhythms and grief in mind, we propose having a regular check-in with your family. In tandem with regular check-ins your family could think of something called a gap plan. This is clearly discussed by Dr Brene Brown in her podcast Unlocking Us. You can click here for the full content.
